The other teachers laugh as Mr. Escalante asks to teach
calculus. He speaks of using an advanced placement test for those who would be
able to take the class. The weather seems to have changed so the class is move
to a room that was supposed to be air-conditioned. Mr. Escalante hands out the
placement test. He talks about the class being on different days. One of the students walks out in the middle
of class and Mr. Escalante makes fun of her. He follows her down the hall way
and apologizes. He tries to teach the kids but he just expects them to do
better without listening to them. He insults the kids for getting all of the
wrong. After his mild heart attack he still goes to class to teach the kids.
One of the methods he uses involves the kids lining up against the wall and
answering calculus problems. If someone gets it wrong they go to the end of the
line. His car gets stolen so he has to walk home. He passes a biker a
restaurant and he also passes over a bridge. He believes he made a mistake by
teaching them calculus because the state believes the kids cheated on. “you are
the true dreamers and dreamers can accomplish everything”.
Extremely through notes, it helped me fill in a few gaps
ReplyDeleteGood notes on some of the main points of the second half of the movie. I like the quote at the end.
